Warning: Contains spoilers for Berserk volume #42.Following Kentaro Miura’s death in 2021, Berserk was officially revived in 2022 by Kouji Mori and Miura’s team at Studio Gaga, and volume #42, the first volume for its revival, was published in 2023. All of that was only in Japan, however; Berserk only receives official updates in English whenever a new volume is published, and even after a year, there has been little news about volume #42’s English release.
Anyone waiting for Berserk’s official continuation in English has been left in the lurch for over two years now, but fortunately, there’s finally a confirmed release date. At the Dark Horse Comics panel at Anime NYC 2024, it was announced that Berserk volume #42 would be published in English on March 18, 2025, about a year and a half after its publication in Japan.
As long a wait as that is, it’s largely consistent with the manga’s release schedule, and overall, it’s great that people now have an idea of when they can continue Berserk by official means.
Berserk Volume 42’s Story Explained
The First Volume Of The Manga After Miura’s Passing
Berserk volume #42 continues the story from where Kentaro Miura left things before his death with Griffith, now confirmed to be the Moonlight Child, arriving on Elfhelm after Casca regained her sanity. Naturally, a fight breaks out between them, or at least as much as one can thanks to Griffith’s nigh-invulnerability as a member of the God Hand, and by the end of the conflict, Berserk begins to enter a new story arc, the first in almost a decade.
Why Berserk Is Still Exciting To Read After Kentaro Miura’s Death
Berserk Is Still As Great As Ever
Berserk volume #42 will be the first volume to be released since Kentaro Miura’s death, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. While there are notable differences between Miura’s and Studio Gaga’s art in terms of paneling and general visuals, the artwork for Berserk from volume #42, onward, is still filled with incredible composition and detail in every chapter, which still leaves it as one of the best-looking manga a person can read. Studio Gaga has done a great job of emulating Kentaro Miura’s art style, so longtime fans of the series will not be disappointed.
More to the point, of course, is the story Berserk volume #42 told. Berserk’s story is still as wonderfully dark and engaging as ever, and most importantly, Kouji Mori previously stated that he wouldn’t do anything with Berserk ’s story that Kentaro Miura didn’t already plan out in advance, so even with Miura’s passing, it’s still going to be his story until the very end. Berserk’s revival has done an excellent job of continuing Kentaro Miura’s legacy, and it’s great that English fans will finally be able to experience that come March 2025.
