I call this week’s selection ‘flexible reds’ as they’re juicy and lighter styles, perfect for a balmy September evening yet sufficiently vibrant and giving to lift a drizzly day that feels like winter. Over the past decade I’ve noticed my palate shifting from bold and oaky reds to these more versatile, bright styles, which I love for their effortless charm, either paired with food or enjoyed on their own, no matter the moment or weather.
Gérard Bertrand Le Chouchou Syrah 2023 (11%), £12.99, Waitrose.
‘Le Chouchou’ translates roughly as ‘the darling’ – an apt name for an ultra-light red that’s this fruity, silky and cheeky. Ideal for a laid-back soirée. Serve chilled.
Athlon Greek Xinomavro Syrah 2022 (13%), £8.99, Aldi.
This Greek red blend impresses with its alluring cherry fruit, floral elegance and savoury undertones. It’s the perfect pour for a late-summer barbecue or Sunday roast.
Extra Special Garnacha 2022 (14.5%), £6.75, Asda.
Brimming with ripe strawberries and white peppery notes, this is a wine best popped in the fridge to bring out its lively fruit. It is gorgeously drinkable, but keep in mind the high ABV.
Taste the Difference Beaujolais Supérieur 2020 (13%), £12, Sainsbury’s.
With violet florals, dark berries and a fresh finish, this classic-style Beaujolais enhances everything from pizza to more robust dishes such as coq au vin.
