Square Enix has announced that the previously confirmed PC port of Final Fantasy 16, the latest main entry in the publisher’s long-running RPG franchise, is releasing next month. But PC players won’t have to wait until then to check out the game, as Square Enix has released a free demo on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Final Fantasy XVI launched on PlayStation in June 2023. The RPG returned the popular series back to its high-fantasy roots, and featured slick combat alongside a compelling story filled with heart. However, if you didn’t own a PS5, you couldn’t play. People always assumed a PC port was coming, although that didn’t stop Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida from telling frustrated fans in January 2023 to “buy a PS5″ instead of waiting for a possible PC port. In September 2023, Square Enix finally confirmed what everyone had suspected: FF16 would arrive on PC in the future. And now we know when.

On August 19, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XVI would arrive on PC on September 17. The newly revealed PC port will cost $50, alongside a “Complete Edition” that will cost $70 and include both DLC expansions, Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide. Both PC versions will be available on Steam, Humble Bundle and the Epic Games Store. You can pre-order them starting today.

Alongside the news of the new port, Square Enix also released a free, playable demo for Final Fantasy XVI on PC. The demo is the opening section of FF16 and will let players carry their save data over to the full game. So it seems to be the same demo experience that PS5 players got last year. Oh and Square Enix also released a fancy new trailer announcing the FF16 port, too.

There’s no official news yet for when or if we’ll see Final Fantasy XVI arrive on other platforms, like Xbox. But in March, Yoshida teased more ports after the PC version: “Once the PC version is released, we’re thinking about hopefully moving to other platforms as well,” said the producer. So perhaps Xbox owners will one day get to pet good boy Torgal, too.
