Holy double Robins, Batman!
An animated DC film following two of the Batman sidekicks is in the works, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn announced on social media Tuesday afternoon.
“Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd,” Gunn posted on X. “The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho. This is something special.”
Though Reeves is producing, the storyline for Dynamic Duo will not tie into his film The Batman or its TV spinoff, The Penguin. Instead, according to Variety, it will follow how “the friendship between Grayson and Todd as youths becomes tested by their diverging ideas for what their future should be.”
For his part, Reeves shared Gunn’s announcement, writing in the caption, “I couldn’t be any more excited…!” alongside fitting emojis of a bat and a robin.
As for the animation itself, according to its website, “Swaybox Studios is bringing the magic of practical puppetry to the big screen in ways never before seen. Since 2014, Swaybox principals Arthur Mintz, Theresa Andersson, Noah Scruggs, Chris Armand, and Thomas Woodruff have pioneered new methods that challenge viewers’ notions of how puppets look, move, and feel. The result is long-form storytelling that is visually breathtaking, dynamically expressive, and — above all — more human.”
The New Orleans-based company, which has a team of 25 animators, fabricators, designers, and artists, touts its ability for its puppetry to retain “the nostalgic charm of this age-old art form.”

In addition to Reeves, Gunn and fellow DC Studios chief Peter Safran and Swaybox Studios’ Andersson will produce Dynamic Duo. Since Gunn and Safran took over DC in 2022, they’ve been busy. Gunn in particular recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about new adult animated series Creature Commandos from the set of Peacemaker season 2, while also working on post-production of next year’s Superman. Gunn says Creature Commandos is the perfect appetizer for what’s to come from DC, which now of course includes Dynamic Duo.
“Superman is the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic. This is a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like,” Gunn says. “There are a ton of fun references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming. So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.”
