There’s obviously not a life at stake when Scott Speedman goes into an operating room on Grey’s Anatomy, but there’s still pressure for him to perform well.

“There’s one lady there who just yells at me every time I’m doing a surgery scene, which I love,” Speedman said with a laugh on Tuesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. “It’s really fun. Cause you screw it up, ya know, she’s on you, but it’s pretty fun doing that.”

The Felicity alum explained in the video below that his recurring character, Dr. Nick Marsh, has to be perfect.

“It’s just how I’m holding something, or I’m not doing something right, or she told me to do something…” Speedman explained of why he might be called out. “She comes over and, like, hits your hand and is like, ‘You’re not doing that right.’ Ya know, you’re trying to do dialogue, which you have no idea what you’re talking about, and you’re trying to do it with a serious face.”

He went on to say that, even though the ABC medical drama is in its 21st season, “they’re very serious when they go to do the surgery scenes.”

The fans are also serious about the love life of Ellen Pompeo’s Dr. Meredith Grey, the widow of the late Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Speedman recalled seeing “a lot of vomit emojis” on social media once when it was teased that his character — a love interest for Grey — was coming back to the show.

He laughed about it and noted that he’s not big on social media anyway.

“It’s really funny how serious they are about that character and who’s with that character and who’s not with that character,” Speedman said of Grey’s fans.

Speedman can also be seen this season in Teacup, a half-hour horror series costarring Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale), which debuted this month on Peacock.
