The Nineties R&B group scrapped two concerts this weekend after Tionne Watkins fell ill
TLC scrapped two performance dates this weekend after member Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins fell ill and was hospitalized.
The Nineties R&B group, famous for hits like “No Scrubs,” “Waterfalls,” and “Creep,” were scheduled to play the New York State Fair in Syracuse on Aug 23. and the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut on Aug. 24. The latter show also featured Shaggy on the bill.
The group issued a statement about the cancellations on Saturday that said Watkins “experienced sudden and severe nausea, vomiting, and intense abdominal cramps” upon arriving in Syracuse after a Thursday night performance in Toledo, Ohio. The singer was hospitalized and received a diagnosis of “a severe abdominal blockage,” adding that a doctor “verified that this was not food poisoning.” Watkins was expected to be released on Sunday.
“Tionne deeply regrets having to cancel these shows and extends her sincere apologies to all her fans and the event promoters,” the group continued in their statement. “TLC is committed to rescheduling the canceled shows and apologizes to all the fans, particularly those who traveled long distances to attend. The group appreciates the understanding and support.”
Formed in 1990 in Atlanta, TLC — made up of Watkins, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes — were one of the biggest “girl groups” of the Nineties and early 2000s. The band took a brief hiatus following Lopes’ death in a 2002 car accident in Honduras, with Watkins and Thomas eventually carrying on as a duo.
TLC’s next scheduled shows are Saturday, Aug. 31, in Highland Park, Illinois, and Sunday, Sept. 1, in Welch, Minnesota.
