Today’s Connections Category Hints

OCTOBER 03 #479

Bookends in Connections Categories October 3

If you want to have the right guesses for each of these words, understanding subtleties is one of the main keys. There are a lot of possible solutions, but only one way to get a perfect score. To help you achieve that score, we have clues to help you recognize what the categories are before you look at their names:

  • One category is about certain kinds of liquids.
  • One category is about how to take care of a type of living thing.
  • One category is about multiples of things.
  • One category is about words that are all the names of a creature with extra letters added on.

After you have examined the clues and the words, if you still need a helping hand, you can check out all the category names listed below.

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained

BEVERAGES

JUICE

MILK

PUNCH

SODA

The main part of this category that might prove tricky is the word WATER. It is a very common beverage, after all, but it does not go in this category. Otherwise, PRUNE might trick some players, as it is a type of juice, but it is much more specific than the other beverages listed here. Once I had water firmly placed in another category, it was much easier to put these four words together without any issues, although PUNCH did have me thinking it went with SMITE and SOCK for a moment.

CARE FOR A PLANT

FERTILIZE

POT

PRUNE

WATER

I got this category first, although I had a couple of wrong guesses before I got this one. That was mainly due to SMITE and SOCK as mentioned above, but luckily I pivoted and looked for something else. Seeing POT and PRUNE as I looked over the words caught my attention, and I realized that WATER could be a verb as opposed to a noun here. After that, it only took a few moments to look for FERTILIZE, and it was nice to finally see the green bar across the screen.

Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained

BOOKEND

EARBUD

SKI

SOCK

BOOKEND and EARBUD caught my attention as I looked for other possible categories. This is mainly because they do not look like they go with anything else at first glance, but as I thought about it, I realized that they were both items that usually had two that “bookended” something. Looking around, SOCK was another option that came in a pair, and I added in SKI last. This made me happy as I realized I was getting a lot better at recognizing some of the more subtle categories Connections makes use of.

Purple Answers: Revealed & Explained

BUGS PLUS STARTING LETTER

BLOUSE

PANT

SMITE

STICK

This one would be hard to recognize beforehand, and it would be quite impressive if you did. But figuring out that all but one of the letters in each word spells out a bug is something that would take more effort to recognize. Luckily, I came to this one last time, but SMITE and STICK caused me some issues earlier in the puzzle. I was able to pivot fast enough to avoid losing to a false guess today, but I am not always that fortunate. My mistakes are your gain in this instance.
