Andy Samberg recalls cut Golden Globes pee joke

Andy Samberg is still pee-ved about the bit that never made it to air when he hosted the Golden Globes with Sandra Oh in 2019.

The Lonely Island member explained that the cut segment was inspired by a scene from Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s 2018 remake of A Star is Born in which Cooper’s character Jackson Maine pees himself while onstage at the Grammys.

“We were gonna do our version of it where Sandra and I would come out and I was dressed like Jackson Maine,” Samberg recalled on Monday’s episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast. “And she was like, ‘Our next category is bubbling.’ I would be like, ‘Yo. Did we win? Did we win, baby?’ And then she’s like, ‘Oh, no. He’s been drinking again.’”

The Hot Rod star even revealed that they got as far as blocking the scene and setting up a pee rig in his pants before it was cut.

“We were all very excited about the piece and then the pee rig didn’t fire at our one rehearsal, and then the network basically killed it, because they were like, ‘It’s too lowbrow. We don’t wanna do that on the Globes,’” he said. “And I’m like, ‘Yeah? The Globes are super high-brow? Everyone’s drunk and looking at their phone the whole show. I really don’t think it’s gonna matter.’”

Samberg admitted that he was bummed when the pee rig didn’t fire during the rehearsal. “Also, they gave me pants that were, like, water resistant. I’m not kidding,” he added. “They’re like khakis that were water resistant, so it didn’t show up, and everyone was like, ‘It didn’t work!’ And I was like, ‘Well, I’m soaking wet!’”

Cohost Seth Meyers then asked if it was true that Samberg also had a second pee rig that would’ve gone off in the other pant leg during the bit. “Oh, and then more was supposed to come out,” Samberg agreed. “Oh, yeah. It was like, ‘Oh, here comes more!’”

Samberg isn’t the only one mourning the loss of the bit. Oh previously said that she wished it had made it into the show while visiting Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2022.

“I wanted to do that too!” Oh said. “I was gonna be talking with this serious monologue and then Andy was gonna — he had the costume and everything — but it’s actually really hard to show pee. It’s harder than you think.”

She continued, “I think, like Saturday Night Live, you will do bits and skits that on the day they’ll decide to cut.”
