Kevin Costner is staying on top of his onscreen image.
Dave Annable, who co-starred with the Dances With Wolves actor on Yellowstone, recently said the Oscar winner told him to change up his look to avoid unfavorable physical comparisons.
“I asked and this one they said yes,” Annable told PEOPLE while discussing his current series Lioness, which allowed him to keep his naturally gray hair for his role. “I asked on Yellowstone, and God bless Mr. [Kevin] Costner, he was like, ‘No – you’re going to dye it. I don’t want to look that old.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Copy that. That makes sense.'”
On the espionage drama, Annable plays Neal, the surgeon husband of Zoe Saldaña’s protagonist Joe. “So yeah, [for] this one I think it works,” the actor said of his gray coif. “We’re able to use it. It looks doctor-y.”
Lioness is another action-drama from Taylor Sheridan, who previously worked with Annable on Yellowstone. Annable played Lee, the son of Costner’s character John Dutton, on the Western series, which ultimately killed him off in its very first episode.
Although his time on the Dutton ranch was short, Annable said he was surprised by how much he enjoyed the cowboy lifestyle. “I’m from New York. I was on a horse twice in my life,” he told PEOPLE in 2023. “I had no idea how much I would love ‘being a cowboy,’ and being in the mountains of Montana and on a horse. I mean, it hits different, all of it.”
Annable was grateful to have a meatier role in Lioness. “I’m super excited. Taylor’s incredible. He’s one of the best, most authentic voices we have out there right now,” he said last year. “You put this cast together and I’m like, “Holy s—, this is an all-star team.”
That all-star team also includes Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Kelly, Martin Donovan, and Laysla De Oliveira.
However, Annable remains a little fearful for his job stability. “Taylor has said I have a face he wants to kill,” he said. “For this, I was like, ‘Don’t kill me, I can’t take two in a row.'”
