Liam Payne, the pop singer best known for his work in One Direction, has died at age 31.
The singer fell from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina, PEOPLE has confirmed. TMZ reported that it was the fourth floor of the building, while other outlets reported it was the third floor. Payne was in Argentina to attend a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan.
EW has reached out to police and reps for Payne.
Born in 1991, Payne and Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Horan formed One Direction after individually auditioning for The X Factor in 2010. The group recorded five albums in six years before going on indefinite hiatus in 2016. Payne has songwriting credits on many of the group’s hits, including “Story of My Life,” “Steal My Girl,” and “Ready to Run.”
After the disbandment of One Direction, Payne launched a solo career that included the 2017 hit “Strip That Down” and the 2019 album LP1.
This is a developing story.
