At this point in her career, Meryl Streep has done just about everything, but filming a particular scene in season 3 of Only Murders in the Building with rumored boyfriend, costar, and fellow legend Martin Short, reduced her to tears, according to co-creator John Hoffman.
Streep called playing a romantic scene “at this age” with Short the “greatest thing ever.”
“I remember one night we were shooting on the ferry in episode 5 of season 3. We shot until about two in the morning on the most gorgeous night in Manhattan,” Hoffman told Decider. “I got off to gangplank there and Meryl was waiting and she had tears in her eyes and she said, ‘I just had to wait here for you to get off the boat to say thank you.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ and she said, ‘I just got to play a scene I really thought that the likes of which I wouldn’t have a chance to do. To play romantic scenes at this age with this band in this way, it’s just the greatest thing ever.’”

“That felt like one of the most gratifying things,” Hoffman continued. “And I kept on thinking like, ‘I hope the world falls in love with this couple the way we all are.’ And that is so due to the magic that they create together.”
Streep joined the third season of the Emmy-winning comedy as a love interest to Short’s Oliver Putnam, a has-been Broadway producer now solving murders with his besties Charles (Steve Martin) and Mabel (Selena Gomez).
Streep portrayed Loretta, a never-was theater actress who suddenly gets her big break in Oliver’s show, and the two soon develop a romantic affair, only for Loretta to emerge as a suspect in the season’s murder. Streep returned as a recurring guest for the fourth season and in the finale, she and Oliver are supposed to get married.
Off-screen, Short and Streep have sparked romantic rumors of their own, though neither has commented publicly on their relationship, save for a denial from Short that they’re “just very close friends” back in January following an appearance at the Golden Globes. But those rumors, much like Loretta and Oliver, are still going strong.
