The Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage-led Longlegs has reached a massive milestone for Neon. The film follows an FBI agent, Lee Harker (Monroe), who is tasked with hunting down an occultist serial killer who has killed several families without being physically present for the crimes. The film also stars Michelle Choi-Lee, Dakota Daulby, Kiernan Shipka, Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt in supporting roles. In the two weeks since its release, the film has grossed $51 million domestically and $60 million globally.
The Oz Perkins-written and -directed thriller starring Monroe and Cage is on track to beat the domestic box office gross of the Oscar-winning Parasite ($53.3 million), making it the highest domestically grossing film from Neon, according to Deadline. The feat was pulled off with a P&A that cost under $10 million, with cryptic clips and one official trailer, which, for the most part, keep the involvement of its main star Cage in the dark. Longlegs is the top-grossing R-rated horror film of 2024 so far and became the highest-grossing indie horror film in its second week, beating A24’s Talk to Me.
2024 Has Been A Good Year For Horror Films
Longlegs Deserves Every Dollar
It’s an impressive feat from Perkins and his cast, especially Cage, who make sure the film is memorable in the long term with its constant dread and remarkable performances.
The year has so far seen some impressive movies from the horror genre, starting with the David Dastmalchian-led Late Night with the Devil, which had its theatrical release in March. The possession horror was a slow burn with a satisfying, shocking third act and a great showcase of Dastmalchian’s talent. Then came the prequel to the successful A Quiet Place franchise from John Krasinski. While he didn’t direct it, the movie made an impressive box office opening, sitting just shy of $245 million worldwide at the time of writing. The most recent horror hit is Oddity, which subtly delivered its satisfying scares.
Neon’s Longlegs has earned its place in this year’s top horror films and might be one of the best. Directed with a sure-handed touch from Perkins, the satanic horror is dripping with an atmosphere that gets under one’s skin from its cold opening to its ambiguous ending. Pair Perkins’ direction with Monroe’s cold, somewhat aloof, performance and Cage’s creepy once-in-a-lifetime turn as the titular serial killer and the result is a film that is staying with audiences long after the credits roll.
