One Of The Decade’s Best Movies Scores An Impressive Box Office Weekend 10 Years After Its Release

The Whiplash re-release has made an impressive box office debut years after its release. The thrilling drama is a 2014 film by La La Land director Damien Chazelle, which follows the story of a drumming student named Andrew who is under the intense direction of a domineering band instructor, Fletcher. Whiplash was based on the director’s own 18-minute short film from the year prior. Whiplash was nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture. It won Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons’ role of Fletcher, and this weekend, the film debuted its 10th anniversary re-release.

As per Collider, Whiplash brought home a decent box office intake during its re-release screenings this weekend. The film saw a domestic gross of $578,000 across its first three days. Released at an estimated 695 domestic theaters, this total represented an average of over $800 per theater.

What Whiplash’s Total Meant At This Weekend’s Box Office

Whiplash Had Stiff Competition

Whiplash was made on an estimated budget of $3 million. During the time of its release in 2014, the film ended up taking home around $50 million worldwide. This total represented massive returns for the fairly low-budget film, helping the movie to get enough exposure to go on to receive Oscar nominations and boost Chazelle’s career in directing. The fact that the film can still bring in over half a million dollars in a 10th anniversary re-release is a testament to the movie’s lasting cultural impact.

Whiplash‘s weekend box office numbers are especially impressive given the competition. This past box office weekend saw several major releases, including Transformers One and Never Let Go, as well as the well-reviewed body horror film The Substance. While Whiplash did not manage to make it into the top 10 films of the weekend, the movie did come in no. 15, which is fairly impressive for a re-release. It even beat out returning hits such as Twisters and Inside Out 2. Even though these two titles are well into their runs, being beaten by a re-release is still impressive.

Why Whiplash Is Worth Watching In Theaters

Whiplash Has Key Sonic Elements

I am thrilled to see Whiplash do as well in theaters as it did during its re-release, as it is a movie that deserves a theatrical viewing. As evidenced by its Oscar win for Best Sound Mixing, Whiplash is a sonic experience whose percussive beats drive the film forward, creating the films main anxiety. I’m not alone in saying that Whiplash is one of the best films of its decade; Whiplash‘s reviews amounted to a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is routinely touted as a modern classic. For these reasons, I love to see Whiplash getting this second theatrical wind.
