Xbox is expanding its streaming options and will now let players stream some games they already own that aren’t included in Game Pass on any device that supports it.

Since 2020, Xbox has let Game Pass Ultimate Subscribers stream a large selection of games included in the subscription via various devices and apps. For example, if you were a member, you could play the Halo Master Chief Collection on your phone via cloud streaming. But, if a game you wanted to stream and play wasn’t included in the Game Pass catalog, you were screwed. That changes today, though only for some games.

On November 20, Xbox announced that it would finally let people stream some games they already own. This has been a long-requested feature from fans, something Xbox acknowledges in the blog post announcing the news, and Xbox previously teased that this feature was coming in October.

Currently, you can’t stream any owned game and these purchased games can’t be streamed on Xbox consoles or the Xbox PC app yet, for some reason. You can, however, stream them on all other devices and browsers that support it. So if you already own Assassin’s Creed Mirage, for example, and you are currently an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, you can go to this website, log in, hit play, and start stabbing people without a download or a console. I know, because I just did that.

Currently only 50 games are supported, but that’s better than before when it was zero. Xbox also says that next year you’ll be able to play these owned games via the cloud on your console.

Just yesterday, Sony announced that players would be able to stream some PS Plus games on their PS Portal without a console. Now, Xbox is letting you stream some owned games on your phone without an Xbox. Truly, the streaming wars have begun.
