If only Zoe Saldaña had a Time Stone.
In a new interview, the actress known for playing the steely assassin Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers movies reflected on her performances in the latter films and said she’d do things a little differently in hindsight.
“I wish I could go back and reshoot what Gamora was going through in the Avengers movies,” Saldaña told Variety. “I don’t think I was quite understanding what the Russo Brothers [were doing].”

Gamora plays a massive role in the third and fourth Avengers movies, Infinity War and Endgame, as she’s one of the good guys and the adopted daughter of big bad Thanos (Josh Brolin). After attempting to take down Thanos herself, Gamora is ultimately killed by him to obtain the Soul Stone in a dramatic scene on the planet Vormir. In Endgame, an alternate-timeline version of Gamora abandons Thanos’ mission and joins the Avengers in defeating him once and for all.
Looking back on things, Saldaña wishes she’d dug deeper into that father-daughter bond. “I wish that I could go back and redo it so that I can push a little harder, because it was such a great opportunity to play a daughter having issues with a dad,” she said. “And whether or not she’s having this opportunity to reconciliate or to heal or to repair or simply just walk away from this person — that would have been a great opportunity had I been a little more aware of it back then.”

Still, Saldaña had nothing but praise for Infinity War and Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, noting that the “opportunity they gave me was of a lifetime to highlight Gamora in such a way in their films is something that I will forever be grateful.”
And if she could go even further back in time, Saldaña would change a few things up about her Guardians of the Galaxy performance too.
“I wish I could go back in time and just try so many more things for her,” she said. “[Gamora] was a really fun character to play, but also a really deep character… I know it’s a Marvel movie and we don’t like to use words like ‘deep’ and ‘Marvel’ in the same sentence, but I like to and I take great pride in knowing that I was a part of great films that cater to a younger audience, that inspires a younger audience.”
She added that James Gunn, who wrote and directed the three GOTG movies, really broke the traditional superhero mold when it came to creating the trilogy, which also starred Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff.
“We were supposed to be these rejects that came with childhood traumas and disabilities and mental issues,” Saldaña said. “And he gave these characters space to be loved, to learn about self-love, to love each other, to find a family within their friendship. It was actually a really important film now that I look back at it.”
